Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our security, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
