France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, following months of pressure from the UK.

The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the President urging him to support the plan and saying there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.

French maritime police will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to official statements.

French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.

"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."

Now, a French naval police representative states officers will start intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.

Notably, the official ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to snarl the propellers of the boats.

The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, coming after a short-lived shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official departed from government.

This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.

Now French officials will once more be allowed to stop boats before they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.

Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking methods to adjust to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.

The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
